Simple Life

As I was speeding through the sky at over 500 miles per hour, being chased by the sun, I couldn't help but think about how precarious life would be without electricity. Recent events triggered long-forgotten memories of my childhood on a farm in South Dakota. It feels like only yesterday we didn't have basic amenities that are now considered essential. Back then, fetching water from the well and carrying it to the house was a regular chore, and keeping the flame alive was necessary to prevent the wash basin from freezing overnight. Darkness enveloped us every evening before we lit the lanterns, and our lives were devoid of modern luxuries like television, radio, microwave, hair dryers, and electric toothbrushes. However, the day the Rural Electric Association finally delivered electricity to our doorsteps was a momentous occasion we'll never forget.

But that was then, and this is now. Nowadays, we heavily rely on modern amenities to make our lives easier. Running water is not just hot and cold, but it must also be filtered. Lighting a fire at night has been replaced with complaining about how much dust the highly efficient furnace kicks up. Being in the dark is now an indication of having only basic cable rather than high-definition digital or only having access to one HBO channel. However, I'm not a Luddite, and I don't believe we should completely abandon our conveniences and return to a life of simplicity. Having a hot cup of cocoa waiting for me in the morning is definitely not a bad thing."

Yet there I was, traveling at 500 miles per hour towards an unfamiliar city, which is home to people who, like us, only want a simple life amidst the complexities of the world. In my opinion, every individual should be entitled to basic, simple lives. Access to decent, safe, and sanitary housing, quality affordable health care, and basic nutrition should not be beyond the reach of anyone. This involves actually changing systems, not infinitely funding symptoms. Systems that provide employment, education, training, and social opportunities for everyone regardless of their socio-economic situation.

We should be working towards creating a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where everyone has access to the opportunities they need to thrive. Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.
